“Cachaça” Is Ours, Says Brazil, No Other Country Can Produce It

    Cachaça, a typical Brazilian liquor

    Cachaça, a typical Brazilian liquorBy the end of this month, Brazil expects to have a list with the number of brands of liquor registered abroad under the name of "cachaça" (Brazilian sugar cane liquor).  The survey will also reveal which countries are exporting distilled beverages using this authentically Brazilian brand name.

    According to Ricardo Cavalcante, executive secretary of the Cachaça Sectorial Chamber in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply, the survey will cover the main countries in which cachaça is consumed.

    The countries of the European Union, the United States, China, Japan, and Chile were selected as strategic markets. The preparation of the list will be the responsibility of the Brazilian embassies.

    On the basis of the results of the investigation, Brazil intends to open negotiations with the governments of the countries that import the product to suspend purchases of beverages that bear the "cachaça" label but are not produced in Brazil.

    Brazil will also attempt to cancel the registration of products that use the brand name improperly abroad. Cavalcante says that the situation of each country will be examined in detail to define the negotiating strategy that will be employed.

    In Cavalcante’s opinion, the protection of cachaça involves Brazilian commercial and cultural interests.

    "The moment we are able to protect cachaça, we will be the only ones who can produce it, enhancing its value on the international market."

    Many countries, he explains, "already defend their typical products, such as Portugal in the case of Port wine." Besides the commercial aspect, "cachaça belongs to Brazil’s cultural patrimony, like the samba and Carnaval," he notes.

      Must add sugar to the rim of the Perfect1864 Marbrini
      Oops ! I forgot to say to add sugar around the rim of the Perfect1864Marbrini. A Caipiroska is very close to this drink.
      Also I tried the drink at an upscale bar using Perfect1864 and Leblon Cachaca and really packed a punch. I made sure I got the sugar around the rim. Makes for a pretty drink and the sweetness takes the edge off of the Cachaca. I forgot to mention one of the best parts of the drink is the toast. We clink our glasses and say “Life is Perfect, You are Perfect” I guess that came from the fact that we used Perfect 1864 vodka , the perfect marriage of cachaca and Perfect Vodka and lastly the perfect weather we had at the Barraca Do Francaise everyday in Brazil. We got silly and continued the toast with “not only are you perfect but your bathing suit is perfect!” The next person would say ” Oh Yah, well not only are you perfect but your mind is perfect!” the game would go on until we were exhausted from laughing. Cachaca and vodka mixed will do that. Drink responsibly!

      US Cachaca Trade Council
      – The US Cachaca Trade Council is proud to support and promote the sale of Premium Brand Cachacas that are 100% produced in Brasil.
      – Unfortunatley some manufacturers have decided to strip away the flavor of Cachaca and produce a vodka-like product that resembles little to the high quality ,fresh, cane Cachacas currently found in Brasil.
      – Double distillation is only necessary if you have a poor quality product to start off with.
      – The USCTC can direct US consumers to several high quality US brands of Cachaca, that are produced under strict adherance to the council’s Cachaca standards.
      -With the USCTC’s support these premium brands are available in the US at prices that range from $15.00 to $18.00 per liter
      -Please try Veritas, Frisco Fish or the new FISH Brands of Cachaca that offer you the very best that Brasil has to offer

      All About CachaÀƒ§a Leblon
      It is true: LEBLON is unlike other CachaÀƒ§as in Brazil:
      – made via Batch Alambique Potstills in the interior of Brazil with a controlled fermentation, 1st class yeasts, and single distillation to maximize the fruity nose of the natural cane cachaca;
      – lightly aged in Saint Sauvant, France in vintage XO cognac casks, which add no wood but reconcile the ‘edges’ of the cachaÀƒ§a;
      – the result is something that is very different from most CachaÀƒ§as: lively, fruity nose of the fresh cane with a natural smooth taste;
      – as the creator of LEBLOn, eu posso falar que nada artificial esta adicionado, e tudo esta feito FIRST CLASS.

      The Perfect Caipiroska
      In response to the Mabrini….I have visited Brazil and enjoyed its fabolous Cachaca! I have yet to purchase any in the states because I feel it won’t be authentic and is generally very over priced based on what I paid in Brazil. But, I do go to a famous retaurant in New Brunswick, NJ and drink the Perfect Caipiroska, a drink that brings me back to the Brazil feel, but I know I am not being over charged because it is being made with the higest quality vodka in the world, Perfect 1864 Vodka. I was laughing when I read that the owner of the Barracca had his own private stash, he must have a source to France or the states and a great understanding for quality. Next time I go to Nova Terra I will order the Perfect Marbrini….keep you posted!

      What are those people talking about? Of course Brazil has it’s problems regarding copywrite, but that has been fought against! It’s not an easy thing though! Ask Mexico, China and any other country!!! But that doesn’t mean WE Brazilians don’t have the right to enforce and protect one of our must valuable national product!!! Cachaca is not “Rum”, as some people think. It’s 100% Brazilian! It was created by the slaves that were forced to migrate to the country, and along Feijoada, Samba and Capoeira, it is part of our national identity! Maybe one day one of you guys above will be lucky to experience what Brasil is all about….

      Well, well well… so brazil would like to protect their “copywrite” on cachaÀ§a? One of the biggest culprits of prirated merchandise in the world??? Seems the shoe is on the other foot now isn’t it? What goes around comes around, so when brazil enforces all other copywrite laws perhaps they can keep cachaÀ§a exclusively brazilian. I won’t hold my breath, though.
