Brazilians Feel 7.5 Peruvian Earthquake

An earthquake of approximately 7.5 on the Richter scale which hit Peru, yesterday was felt in the northern Brazilian states of Amazonas and Rondônia.

According to a professor at the University of Brasília Seismology Observatory, Vasile Marza, most earthquakes occur at a depth of less than 40 kilometers from the surface of the earth and are not felt at long distances.

However, when an earthquake is deeper it can be felt as far away as 3,000 kilometers. The Peruvian earthquake was strong and deep (around 85 kilometers down).
