Left Creates New Party in Brazil

A manifesto signed by various leftist intellectuals marked the official inauguration of a new political party, the Partido Socialismo e Liberdade ”“ P-SOL (Socialism and Liberty Party), in São Paulo. The P-SOL was founded last June by 750 representatives from 22 states. The president of the new party is senator Heloisa Helena from Alagoas state.

“The launch of the P-SOL is of singular importance. It is a new attempt to reach utopia. It is a radically new party, combining liberty and democracy in a socialist synthesis,” says the manifesto. “We seek to halt the country’s descent into barbaric capitalism. We seek an alternative to the death of the Brazilian dream of justice, dignity and socialism,” concludes the document.
