In a seminar today and tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, representatives of Brazil, India, and South Africa are debating the challenges of sustainable development.
The participants include the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim; the Brazilian Minister of Social Development and Hunger Alleviation, Patrus Ananias; the South African Minister of Social Development, Zola Skweyiya; the Indian Minister of the Planning Commission, Rajeeva Shah and lawmakers and representatives of civil society from the three countries.
Another illustrious participant is Joseph Stiglitz, Columbia University (US) professor and Nobel Prize winner in Economics. This morning he gave a lecture on globalization, its impacts on the poorest countries, and the geopolitical importance of relations among countries of the Southern Hemisphere.
The seminar on Economic Development with Social Equity is an initative of the India/Brazil/South Africa Dialogue Forum (IBAS), a consultation mechanism established by the three countries in 2003.
