Brazil Wants More than an Apology from London for Killing of Brazilian

Federal deputy Maria José Maninha from the Workers Party has called for action by the Ministry of Foreign Relations with regard to the case of a Brazilian, Jean Charles de Menezes, who was shot by London police who thought he was a terrorist.

Maninha wants a formal protest to be made to the British government. She also demands that a thorough investigation into the incident take place.

“The fact that British authorities have recognized that an absurd error ended the life of de Menezes is not enough. He was an innocent victim of a violent act and had no way to defend himself. We want more than an apology,” she declared.

Terror in Egypt

In a belated note, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations expressed the Brazilian government’s “profound regrets and solidarity with the government and people of Egypt because of the terrorist attacks which took place at Sharm-el-Sheikh on July 22.”

The note continues: “In accordance with its pacific vocation and traditional position of strongly condemning terrorism, Brazil repudiates this barbarous act which caused great consternation in Brazilian society. We are confident Egyptian authorities will punish those responsible.”
