Brazil Will Become a World Power Despite the Big Powers, Says Lula

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reaffirmed that one of his government’s priorities is Brazil’s integration with the countries of South America, China, and India.

The President made the comment at yesterday’s, July 20, inauguration of the North and Northeast Regional Center of Nuclear Sciences (CRCN-NE), in the Northeast Brazilian city of Recife,

Brazil, Lula added, spent years “intellectually and politically” subordinated to the great powers. Thus, he proposed the alternative development strategy of “looking to neighboring countries.”

The President said that his Administration is willing to face up to whatever is required to prove that Brazil “is not going to throw away” the chance to become a great nation, “regardless of who may take offense.”

Lula affirmed that the government is intent on making Brazil a better country. He argued that leadership capacity depends much more upon people’s character and intelligence than their academic training.

In his speech, he recalled that, in Brazil, “more than just a few leaders presumed to administer the country for the sake of 35 or, at most, 40 million Brazilians, the ones who make up the consumer market.”

According to Lula, including the entire Brazilian population in the government’s plan, as he has done, “is a task that is infinitely more difficult but, at the same time, more gratifying.”
