Operation Uiraçu, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), has already levied approximately US$ 3.3 million (R$ 8 million) in fines on sawmills responsible for illegal deforestation in the state of Amazonas.
According to the executive manager of the Ibama in Amazonas, Henrique Pereira, over 6 thousand cubic meters of wood have been seized.
Pereira says that 28 sawmills were inspected. “Of the 28, 22 sawmills have already been charged, and 6, barred. The apprehended wood should be donated to needy institutions in the region.”
According to Pereira, the operation also seized various pieces of equipment.
“This action is strategic in view of the fact that, by stopping these machines from functioning, we effectively put an end to the deforestation,” he said.
The operation, which is expected to continue through November, receives support from the Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam) and the Amazonas Protection System (Sipam).
