Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will visit a Brazilian community in Nagoya, during his official trip to Japan, scheduled for next week. Approximately 300 thousand Brazilians live in Japan, the third largest Brazilian community abroad.
The United States is the country preferred by emigrants, with more than 1 million Brazilians, followed by Paraguay, which has 500,000.
According to the Director of the Department of Asia and Oceania of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations, Ambassador Edmundo Fujita, President Lula’s visit will strengthen the cooperation regarding the Brazilian community, the dekasegis, which sends around US$ 2 billion per year to Brazil.
The Ambassador estimates that Brazilians living abroad send to Brazil around US$ 5 billion per year.
Fujita said that during the trip they will also begin defining the events for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Japanese migration to Brazil, in 2008.
