Guatemala Gets Lessons on Zero Hunger from Brazil

Representatives from Guatemala arrived in Brazil today to become acquainted with the Zero Hunger Program developed by the Ministry of Social Development and Hunger Alleviation.(MDS).

Activities covered by the program include the income transfer program known as the Family Grant, the construction of cisterns in semi-arid regions, community restaurants, and other social welfare policies.

The visit is part of a technical cooperation agreement between the MDS and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Relations, on the Brazilian side, and the Guatemalan government, for the purpose of implanting hunger alleviation and food and nutritional security projects in that Central American country.

According to the executive secretary of the MDS, Márcia Lopes, Brazil is demonstrating the workings and results of the Zero Hunger Program to Guatemala and will assist that country through numerous projects.

The Guatemalan extraordinary Minister of the National Front Against Hunger, Andrés Botrán, says that he chose Brazil as a reference in the campaign against hunger and poverty in consequence of the similarity with the social situation in Guatemala.

The delegation will also visit food security projects in the states of Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. They will remain in Brazil through March 8.
