Therefore, leaders in the education sector in the region handed in, last week, a proposal for a course entitled "Conceptualized Education for Coexistence in the Semi-arid" to the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG).
The initiative is by the National Institute for the Semi-Arid (Insa) in partnership with the Network for Education in the Brazilian Semi-Arid (Resab), which includes teachers who work in semi-arid regions in the country.
The specialization should be turned to teachers of public schools in basic education, according to Silvio Rossi, a teacher at the university and coordinator of the group that elaborated the project. The work group was established in March this year after a workshop that brought together education professionals in the region.
An official answer has not yet been given by the UFCG regarding the implementation of the course, but Rossi believes that approval should be fast, as the university has accompanied the initiative behind the project and several professors involved are working on it.
The objective is for the specialization to begin next year. In March next year the first group should be opened, for 40 students, in Sumé, and in July, another class should be opened for the same number of people, in the city of Cajazeiras.
According to Rossi, due to its location, the course in Sumé may be taken by teachers from Pernambuco, as the region is on the border between both states, and the one in Cajazeiras, by teachers in Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte.
The specialization should prepare teachers to give lessons according to the context of the semi-arid. Rossi explained that the objective of the course is not to modify the content of basic education, but to teach how to develop this content taking into consideration the reality of local children.
"We hope, in the future, that when they are in college, these students may contribute in a more effective manner to add value and discover new possibilities in the region," explained Rossi.
The idea is also to expand the project to other states in the Northeast, to generate similar initiatives. According to Rossi, there are already talks, in this respect, with the Ceará State Education Secretariat.
