Brazil: São Paulo, Bring In the Marines and Army, Navy and Air Force! PDF Print E-mail
2006 - May 2006
Written by Carlos Chagas

Carcass of a burned down bus in São Paulo, BrazilThere is only one solution for this unfinished rebellion by São Paulo's organized crime. And as difficult as it is to be adopted it would give back to Paulistas a minimum of peace of mind to go out on the streets. And the solution it to bring in the Armed Forces to repress one of the most shocking shows of animality Brazil has ever seen.

It would be necessary that governor Cláudio Lembo accept the idea to ask Brasília to send in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force to take over the whole state.

Without forgetting the Marines. They would not only serve as police in the streets of the capital and main cities, but would also invade rebellious prisons and would act preventively in other establishments where the situation is still normal. They have to make a show of force. Without this public authority would have no authority and it would be better to turn over the Bandeirantes' Palace (the governor's office) to the drug lord Camacho and his seven cronies.

Even locked in the maximum security prison of Presidente Venceslau, or in any other place for that matter, the chiefs of the organized crime will continue instructing their thousands of pals in prison or in liberty to continue to live in debauchery and in disrespect of the institutions.

There is information that  many of the 2,000 prisoners who had been freed by the courts to spend Mother's Day at home are using their time to attack and kill indiscriminately policemen and other citizens.

It's the supreme irony, better yet, it's the supreme tolerance of crime by the law and the Justice. If it's true that the bandits get their cell phones, drugs and even weapons through visitors who come to see them those visits should be suspended indefinitely.

If they receive such material from bad penitentiary agents and from policemen in charge of watching them, then this gang should be locked behind bars. If they use a thousand legal resources given by the Penal Code to get rid of their sentences, it's  the Penal Code that should be revoked.

What can't be done is to let things continue the way they are. If we cannot accept the idea that the only good bandit is a dead bandit at least we should accept the truth that a good bandit is the one who is in jail and tied up.

The Armed Forces are ready to answer to an eventual request by the São Paulo government. Instead of embarrassing and weakening the power of the state would only be strengthened by such a request.

Cowardice

Inconsistent, extemporaneous, without proof or evidence, slanderous, defamatory, injurious, above all coward. It was with these adjectives that Brazilian capital Brasília reacted to the weekly newsmagazine Veja report, denouncing the existence of a Lula's bank account overseas.

The main parties' leaders, even those from the opposition, understand that the published material is just a collection of garbage that have no weight as a serious charge or accusation.

Naturally, if there were proof to the contrary, the Congress would have to intervene, but the way everything was presented the impression we have is that all of this is nothing more than another idiosyncrasy on the part of the press against the government and the Workers' Party (PT).

Both made monumental mistakes, both wallowed themselves in the mensalão (big monthly allowance) scandal. But to go ahead and announce the existence of a bank account overseas goes a huge distance.  This involves irresponsibility and crime by the press.

All the coverage is based in characters who have been linked more to crime than to the economy and politics. From Daniel Dantas to the former CIA agent Frank Holder, both cited in the story, nobody in their right mind would buy a used car. The same goes for some hacks who call themselves journalists.

The latest information suggests that the government is going to act firmly within the limits defined by the law. Without sacrificing freedom of expression, the Justice Department, the Attorney General, the Federal Police and the Public Defense Ministry are getting ready to demand that those responsible for the accusations show proof of their charges.

The irony of the story makes us think about another one, a few years back, when bandits forged the existence of a secret account involving former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, late São Paulo governor Mário Covas, São Paulo mayor José Serra and other members of the past administration.  The charges demoralized their creators, the same way these accusations seem to have done.

As incredible as that may seem, the oppositions are the ones that will lose the most, because this story is a strange object, and it's worth to repeat, essentially coward, amidst serious investigations and charges concerning scandals that have been probed. It even looks like something done by someone who wishes to help Lula get reelected president.

We need this revolution
written by Guest, May 16, 2006

I propose an armed government organization that would kill corrupt politicians and criminals, starting by Cláudio Lembo and going all the way up to Lula.

The project should go to Lula's office and as he cannot read properly, he would sign it and the revolution would start.

Also there is only one cure to stop the Sao Paulo bandits: bullets in their heads.

HEY, EVER HEARD OF THE ELECTRIC CHAIR OR THE HANG MAN'S NOOSE? NO, YOU ARE LETTING CRIMINALS GO HOME FOR MOTHER'S DAY. GET A CLUE!
Enough is enough!

The big threat our country is facing does not come from the criminals. As powerful as they are now, they can still be destroyed without much difficulty, just a matter of having our armies and police forces willing to do so. Our big threat comes from our politicians! No matter what party they belong to, be it PSDB or PT, they are f**king our country. Curing criminality is not a matter of education or caring for the poor. It's a matter of just killing the bad guys, be them criminals or politicians (that's all the same anyway). It's the politicians who lie to us while making agreements with criminals. If we do not stop them, the criminals will be governing us pretty soon.

I completely agree to the first poster. It's time for us brazilians start to kill our politicians. Words won't help us anymore.

I've been saying that for years. Why do you think that american politicians rarely steal public monies?? Because the U.S. has a history of assassinating politicians, even presidents. If you f**k the people, you only f**k yourself. That is exactly what needs to happen here in brazil!
You\'ll take it - each and every one . .
written by Guest, May 16, 2006
You Brazilians are going to sit down, shut the f**k up and take it just like 95% of people in the world TAKE IT!!! You are all talk just like Americans, Russians, Germans, Brits, Aussies, etc. Everyone is so f**king full of s**t it makes me laugh. What are any of you going to do about it?? Name one thing any of you will do in the next year besides cast a ballot for another crooked politician?

If these gangs hadn't been killing police and firemen the government would have simply let them slaughter you civilians - they [Lula, Inc.] doesn't give a flying f**k about you. Lula would rather see you dead. I like to hear all the heated talk though - it makes for exciting posts.

Now vai tomar uma caipirinha, have a nice feijoada then wake up tomorrow and lube your bunghole so the government can overtax you, spend more money on chauffering around government functionaries than on prisons, pay senators for votes and let the rich get even richer while f**king you right up the ass and you say thank you sir may I have some more . . . Don't worry you will be in very f**king poor company right along with all the bitching, moaning worthless fat-ass f**king loser Americans who do absolutely nothing to throw out their Liar-in-Chief . . .

I'm american, and I live here in brazil, for quite some years now, I have family here, children, that are brazilian/american. When all the problems are weighed against the benefits, the U.S. wins hands down. I'm sorry, but I hate to think of my children being raised here in brazil for the rest of their childhoods. At least in the U.S. if you have cash, you can escape most all the negatives that exist there. Here in brazil, it doesn't matter if you're Bill Gates, you're still living in a self-imposed prison called "home", behind gates, walls, and electric fences. You'll take your kids to school in a car protected by bullet-proff glass, and have to hire security to ensure they're not kidnapped.

All of this and more, the poverty hits you in the face, its inescapable. Why do people think that literally 10's of thousands of brazilians risk life and limb, mortgage everything they have to try and enter the U.S. illegally. And we're not talking about only poor people naturally, poor people in brazil could never dream of coming up with 10,000 dollars to try and enter the U.S. illegally. Brazilians know they're reality, and so do I. I'm truly saddened by it, for my children if for no other reason.
Chagas-BPA rep! ? Bring in the Army
written by Guest, May 16, 2006
I look forward to seeing Mr Chagas repeat his ridiculous views on Observatorio da Imprensa one day!.
Apart from the Federal Police and a newly trained elite force, the Armed Forces in Brazil are even less prepared to deal with the criminal gangs.
Army barracks are assalted in broad daylight!
There is now just a chance that the events in Sao Paulo will concentrate the minds of the legislators and the Judiciary into action which, for example, severely limits the capability of prisoners to organise from behind bars: common sense to most people but then you are talking about politicians and judges who so often lack the courage and the will to make real changes.

You're a perfect example of the biggest f**king idiot the USA has to offer!! Love the naivete though. Yeah yeah - Land of the Free (phones tapped, internet monitored and soon to be purchased by big telecoms, slaughtering innocent people all over the world, soon to be bombing Iran, getting your head handed to you by the Chinese). f**king hilarious. You're the kind of a*****e that drives around with an American flag and 5 "I support the troops" stickers on your gas guzzling ride. f**kING LOSER!!! LOL!!

BTW - I am American!! And in case you haven't noticed you do live under a dictator even more murderous than Saddam. "I wish we could round 'em up and make em BLA BLA BLA". Shut the f**k up you spineless little prick. Now go sing God Bless America . .
Brazilian lying about being American??
written by Guest, May 17, 2006
"Well i am an American with a great love for the brazilian people. and that guy is a moron and a fool. american or not."

Behold - a sentence from an American educated idiot (or so he says). Can you count the number of grammatical errors in that sentence that add up to a f**king little s**thead Brazilian who is so ashamed of his country and heritage that he lies about being American? Shame on you!!! We all know you're not American friend. Americans are f**king retards but even a high school graduate can usually put together a better sentence than that.

Yes, Have you wonder how many those crminals was killed by police in SP, the same police with a brutal killer fame.
Now your plan is to bring the federal arm in the war, yes because a marine, yes marines, if you don't know they are trained to kill, well at least shoot and a lot till is dead! Now a high caliber arm shooting in SP street or worse the slums will bring the dead toll a little higher, well at least the people in SP and Brazil will be happy to know is only "criminals" dead! Who will belive the dead was inocent?

Reply:

When the LA riots happened, over the Rodney King verdict, The United States Marines were dispatched to help restore order. It helped signficantly.

The SP police and SP firemen have to be given great credit though. It's clear the SP police shed blood and gave their lives to combat the gang attacks and bring back order onto Sao Paulo streets.

It would be nice if Bill Gates or some very wealth person could donate a billion dollars over the course of a few years or decade, to bringing state of the art weapons, vehicles, technology, and facilities to the SP. Upgrading them for future battle with SP gangs.

But Brazil really has to do something about their prison system (which is inhumane and breeds hatred even more) and educational system.

I wish Brazil and the people of Brazil the best.

Brazil doesn't need bill gates to donate billions to update their weaponry. They just spent 10 million dollars to send a brazilian to space for a week that accomplished absolutely nothing, it was a political ploy to win votes.

And as Jack Snow said, the former head of the IMF about approving loans for brazil, "the money normally ends up in a bank account in Switzerland." And numerous brazilian politicians were appalled when he made that statement. You see, here in brazil, even though his statement couldn't have been more true, it's considered "impolite" to comment on the theivery that exists in brazil, especially by a non-brazilian, whether it be true or not.

"Good time to have death penalty now. Both to criminals and corrupt politicians as well. Both those two groups should be afraid."

BULLs**t!!! Time for YOU to be afraid!! The government is negotiating with these criminals as we speak. You have just witnessed another quantum leap in Brazilian lowness. The government is now cowing to the wishes of organized crime on levels never before seen.

As for being scared - that is f**king laughable. They [the criminals - oh I mean the street variety] aren't any more scared than the senators who took money for votes are scared of being prosecuted! LOL!! You are going to take it right up the ass like good little zombies and do as Uncle Lula tells you. You are going to vote for him again and he is going to f**k you longer, harder and deeper when he is a lame duck. Good luck Brazil - now bend over!!!

America, Russia and much of the rest of the world have already bent over and taken it - now it's your turn. You will not do anything just like everyone else in the world. You will sit idly by and watch them steal from you, lie to your faces and offer you peanuts for your tax dollars. You will do exactly as they say!!

I have to confess that as a Brazilian I am ashamed of our politicians and our judiciary system. To be called a politician in Brazil today is a derogatory term. Our politicians are so shameless that even when they are called corrupts and criminals, irresponsible and incompetents or unpatriotic, they show no guilty reaction or consternation. They continue to smile to the TV cameras or just refer to the whole issue as trivial. They consider that the whole thing is part of politics: their politics. Any honest person when called by any of those names would act in dismay but not our politicians.

What is happening in Sao Paulo should be enough to take thousands or even millions of people in many of the Brazilian cities in protest against the situation and the lack of responsibility and competence of our politicians. We should tell them that we are sick and tired of listening to the same excuses they have. Will that ever happen? I doubt it. Will our politicians ever change? I doubt it. As long as we continue acting as a fragile people the politicians are contented in doing exactly what they are doing; nothing accountable.

exactly! As long as the policy of impunity exists, why not steal? Nothing happens to you if you're caught. Maybe you won't win the next election. Maybe you'll be removed from office at worst, but the money you stole will never be compensated for.....never.

It's a country that is being ran by a "banda de ladrões"!!!
I have a solution
written by Guest, May 17, 2006
Lula should ask Bush to send the American Army into Sao Paulo. It's bored, and needs a little refresher on handling urban warfare.
Where are the protests?
written by Guest, May 17, 2006
I don't think Brazilians know how to protest. Just cower behind their gates and wire like sheep.
...
written by Guest, May 17, 2006
brazilians don't know how to protest, they cower like the cowards they are, they accept getting a 10 foot c**k in the ass with a smile on their face and asking for more.

Brazil could NEVER be a threat to the U.S., the U.K., Germany, or even France(god forbid), they know NOTHING about sacrifice, only how to bow to authority, senators, dupatados, etc. It doesnt matter if these politicians stole a billion dollars of public money while the public is dying of starvation.....its accepted willingly! These type of people deserve everything they get.....hopefully, sooner or later, they'll get their fill, but I just can't see it.
...
written by Guest, May 17, 2006
Yeah, it seems that we gave all our courage to the organized crime. They are fearless so why can we not be as such?

During the military dictatorship, as I remember when I was a kid, people in Brazil, students, wives and labor workers would go the streets and face the military police. So, we had courage to protest and even confront the military government, many died and many were arrested and tortured and even “deported” from their own country.

What do we see now when the people should show the government who is the boss?

I do not advocate any violence but a simple powerful political showdown of the Brazilian people against the government: oh well, nay, that will not happen!

We are prisoners of our own fears. May God have mercy on the politically feeble Brazilian people!

Now go back to whining and complaining while doing absolutely f**k ALL!! Continue to follow in the footsteps of the chicken-s**t, cowardly people in America, Russia, Iran and Europe.

The government and the criminals who are striking deals with the government own you. Stop worrying about elections and political populism. That s**t is over. Start aligning yourself with the criminal politicians who have crawled out from under their rocks and pledged allegiance to the true power in Brazil - Narcogangs!! This is truly an amazing moment in Brazil. Embrace your future. You are witnessing the birth of a new socio-political process wherein people take what they want in light of government impotence, greed and corruption.

Obviously with your inferiority complex the size of the amazon you feel compellled to try and look for faults in the U.S.?? LOL!

Listen boy, Brazil doesn't come CLOSE to the U.S. in the social problems that exist!!

We don't have 30% of our populuation making less than 2 DOLLARS per day!

We don't have a minimum wage of "miseria" and the lowest in the WORLD!!

We don't have one of the highest murder rates in the WORLD.

We don't have the 2nd highest number of prostitutes in the WORLD.

We don't have indentured servitude(slave labor).

We don't have the highest rate of unequal distribution of income in the WORLD.

We don't have organized crime gangs that literally shut down sections of international cities (as they do in Rio) and cause "riots" that can be equated to civil wars.

Wake up and spit man! Brazil is for the few that have money, other than that, if you want to try and make a life of it in brazil without money, you want to rely on your hard work and some know-how......YOU'RE f**kED....PERIOD!

BRAZIL IS RAN BY A BANDA DE LADRÃOES!!!!!

What about domestics workers? at least the tomatos pickers in Florida have more benefits. the domestics workers in Brazil won to have their social card sign by the employer some years ago, wasn't this a real labor slave kind?

f**king americans think they can say anything about other countries.

Listen suckers, right now what you do in the internet is being tracked, all your phone calls are being recorded and you are being watched while you walk on the street.

You have 2 presidents to pick, both members of the same secret society, so it makes a s**t of a difference who you pick. You have no power whatsoever over your sucky
government.

Your president is more worried about getting more oil for his family than to work for you ass suckers.

So just accept the fact that you have no liberty at all and stay shut before they do something against you, sell all your stuff and go to a country where "freedom" means something (i.e Brazil).

Brazil has problems, but theres also freedom here. And dont dare answering me suckers because there is a fat american (what a redundance, all of you are over weight )

I just love to hear these people spout-off and try to compare the U.S. to brazil....LMAO!!! They couldn't show their ignorance any clearer!

By the way, have you idiots heard how all this s**t in sao paulo started??? Now with over 150 murdered??

Some prison guard making around 150 dollars per month recorded the meeting that was held deciding to move the boss of the organized crime group to another prison....he sold the tape to the organized crime gang for 200 REAIS!!!!! Yep, 80 f**king dollars!!! When the gang discovered the boss was going to be moved, all hell broke loose, they called their gangs in the street from their cell phones(yep, cellulars in prison!!), and now we have more than 150 people murdered!!!

EIGHTY f**kING DOLLARS!!!! What does that tell you about brazilian reality??

And freedom in brazil?? For who?? For those with cash??? Certainly not for those making minimum wage!! There is only freedom and justice for those that have relatives or relationships with judges, police, and politicians.....BRAZIL IS CORRUPT TO THE GILLS!!!

It is interesting how Brazilians loved the good old military times. In my opnion, a good criminal is one shot in the head and cremeted on the asphalt, but that isn't the style of the majority of the herd with bambi eyes, unless I'm underestimating the latin bloodlust, of course. What could these people probably be thinking, if they want to push the favelados who have nothing to lose, they should do it on their own watch or at least be willing to envision the matter to it's full extent. Like it or not, these are Vice Lords, and leadership doesn't follow logic, bringing the military out, increasing their spending power, swealing their ranks, in a society with pro-military sentiments. Sure, we need the change, but nothing ever changes, spite of a military coup, or favelados coup, so what's the point I'm counting on new police death squads anyhow, if they want to do anything at all, they need to do it very slowly, as slow as drug wars anyways, eventually they will start selling drugs to finance the clean up, but I find middle class drug lords much more charming than a member dos descamisados, don't you?

Parvulice . . . .

Do any of you pendejos think that Brazil would not intrude even more into the lives of her citizens if only she had the capacity?

The US government is datamining the point to point call data to learn about social networks involving terrorists, which is a benefit for their citizens - there are positive implications for organized crime fighting as well.
The tech evolved out of commercial and academic (sociological) applications and is probably inevitable.
The privacy issues, though real, are often presented idiotically - no government has the resources to listen in on their citizens'/subjects' ordinary conversations - the beauty of the datamining scheme is that even if a court won't allow listening, it still provides useful info without anti-terror or law enforcement having to monitor actual content.

And there was this priest down in Rio Grande do Sul, on the border with Argentina, that would somehow always end up saying some very unkind things about the folks on the other side of the border in his sermons, who often went to mass in the same church. Once, when asked who where the pharisees, the priest simply said they were kind of like the Argentines. And so on, the priest never missed an opportunity to put down the people of Argentina. Well, there were compliants and the bishop called the priest in and categorically forbid him to say anything bad about Argentina and its people, or even to use that world in church. That Sunday the priest goes to the pulpit, as usual, and the bishop shows up to make sure orders are followed. So the priest begins a sermon on the last supper. The bishop sighs in relief. The priest continues the sermon telling about how the twelve are troubled when Jesus says that there is one among them who will betray him. The priest describes how the apostles all want to know who this person is. Peter asks "Senhor, sou eu?" (Lord, it it I?), and John asks "Senhor, sou eu?" (Lord, it it I?), and James also asks the question "Senhor, sou eu?" (Lord, it it I?). Even Judas asks "Senor, es yo?".

Death on the Highway
A Brazilian enters a police station and confesses to the Chief:
- I came to turn myself in, I committed a crime and since then I cannot live in peace.
- Sir, the laws here are very severe and must be obeyed here and if you are really guilty there will be no appeal or excuse about a bad conscience that will keep you out of jail. What crime did you commit?
- I ran over a man.
- That is very, very serious. You may go to jail.
- It was an Argentine on the road to the south of the city of Caxias (near the border).
- My friend, you cannot blame yourself if these Argentines cross streets and higways all the time?
- But he was standing on side of the road.
- He was on the side of the road because he wanted to cross, and if it had not been you it would be someone else.
- But I did not have nor the decency to inform the family of the man, I am a jerk!
- My friend, if you had informed them there would be manifestations, popular repudiation, protests, repression, fights and maybe even more people would die. I think you are a pacifist; you deserve a statue.
- But it is worse... I buried the poor man there, on the side of the road.
- You are a great humanist, to bury an Argentine, You did good, any other person would abandon the body there to be eaten by buzzards and other animals, maybe even hienas.
- But while I was burying him, he cried out: Estoy vivo, estoy vivo! (I am alive, I am alive)
- All lies, these Argentines are always lying...

easily obtainable. If you have an income, and good credit, purchasing things like homes, cars, televisions, is cheap and inexpensive when compared with brazil.

Interest rates in brazil are anywhere from 12-30 times higher per YEAR in brazil than in the states. Making it virtually impossible to finance a home for any extended time period, as in 15-30 years as all americans do.

Things are less expensive in the US for a number of reasons. Some have to do with lower import taxes. Logistical efficiency also helps. It is cheaper to move product around the US because the roads are in general better, and you don't have the near as much cargo theft, which adds to the cost of each product you buy. Then there is also more competition in the US because it is so much easy to start a business. There are other things also, but all this and more adds up to the point where quality products are cheaper in the US. I like Brazil when I lived there but my material expectations are probably lower than most. If new shiney things make you happy then the US is a better place for you, even as an illegal, unless you are in the 5% of super wealthy in brazil.

Everybody knows these scum-bag, evil-doers should be taken out by the police and security forces as soon as possible. They have all the info on the major drug-dealers etc. they need for a 'night of the long knives' to eliminate them, their friends, and supporters. The problem, it seems to me, is the lack of political will to let the police (or other designated agencies) do their job. This was clear in Northern Ireland from the late 70's onwards with the IRA. The army and intelligence services knew exactly who these terrorist leaders were, where to find them, and who their henchmen were. The army, however, was actively prevented from dealing with them (remember the scandal over the 'shoot to kill' policy?). I'm sure the same situation pertains in SP, and this is one reason the State government is reluctant to seek federal help. In my opinion it should, as it has a duty to it's populace to keep the streets free from this type of outrage.
Another point: I disagree with the posters who seem to want to find nothing of good in the USA. And let me tell you why:
(1) My Europe would be a very dark place indeed today had not the US stepped up and come into WW2. Britain would certainly have fallen -- so I'm grateful to them for one.
(2) Take a look at the history of the Great Depression of the 30's, when Europe and the States were in dire circumstances, and see the way the States (like Europe to a lesser extent) has developed economic models that have now radically transformed the economic lives of most of their citizens.
(3) Most technological advances come from the States, I'm sure all you detractors have heard of the internet.
(4) It gives huge amounts of financial aid to other countries (despite claims that in percentage terms it's less per capita than Europe).
In fact the list goes on and on....
And like Europe, if it's such a s**t-hole, why does evey bugger in the world seem to want to get into it, legally or illegally?
Most of you 'anti-brigade' shower are not even US citizens yourselves, and have probably not been there for more than a month in your entire lives, if at all. I think that Brazil should do something about how they control their government. First of all, they shoudn't have let anyone in prison go see their families ore even out of prison at all. Thats a big mistake. You should let the family visit them in jail. Second of all, when the prisoners are being visited by friends and relatives, they should be checked and scanned before going in, to make sure they dont have anything on them that they can give the prisoner. Maybe having the Army, Marines, Navy and Air force take over the State of Brazil, especially Sao Paulo isnt a bad idea. They can take control over the prisons and do whats right for Brazil, and the people of Brazil.

I wish I could read the comments and opinions of different sides , without
the name calling., without the swearing as this type of behavior does not add
validity to anyone point. Unfortunatly it is almost the standard in any political discussion.
Something many people don't understand very well , is who is an american, it could be somebody who came from Portugal many years ago, or even a brazilian or a cherokke, or an arab , or a cuban or colombian or mexican . Brazil is coming out of a dark period
of a dictature , and have its social ills , I am sure there is brilliant and motivated Braziliens who will modify their corrupt juditial system or actually get rid of the one who manipulate and corrupt the juditial system in Brazil . Eliminate the inequities
the traffic of children and women, the slavery, the scams , the prostitution , the gangs,
yes it is a lot to do., almost sound that they may need a deep social revolution , but yes I agree the state has to get control of the streets, I hate to say this, maybe they has to ask Fidel Castro how he did it. And no I am not a fan of Castro , but when things are so bad
and so little hope , extreme measures are in order and a regimen like castro can do it.
Distribution of wealth , control of each city block by block and a solid support from the general population , (no the criminals), It can be done . Criminals will be put to work , and repay the damage done , politicians can not steal or lie . Can be done without eliminating the economic progress .
