A favela, in Rio, Brazil More than any other Brazilian city, São Paulo can serve as a witness of Brazil's strengthening economy. Luxurious commercial buildings being raised everywhere, high-class homes being built all over the city, subway lines expanding at an astronomic pace, brand new cars packing up the streets.

Add to this a huge industrial production increase, following decrease in the number of bankruptcies and record sales of electronics, especially computer and cell phones. São Paulo is showing that Brazil has finally decided to get out of the emerging economy shell, to assume its role as one of the world's leading economies.

The huge flow of prosperity has allowed food supply chain Pão de Açúcar, for example, to profit 60.4 million reais (US$ 38.3 million) in the second quarter, 119% more than in the same period last year. Record numbers never seen in Brazil's history. For those who may not regard consumerism as a truthful indicator of economic growth, some new statistics may change their perspective.

According to the IPEA (Advanced Applied Economics Institute) and the FGV (Getúlio Vargas Foundation) reports, the number of Brazilian families living below the poverty line - whose income is equal or inferior to half minimum wage (US$ 288 monthly) - decreased from 35% to 24,1% in the largest metropolitan areas of Brazil, which are São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Salvador and Recife.

The number of wealthy Brazilians has also increased, which means that families whose income surpasses 40 minimum wages (US$ 10,256) jumped from 0,8% to 1%.

It is estimated that in 2008 there are 11 million Brazilians living below the poverty line. Back in 2002, popular national news magazine Veja revealed that this number was approximately 50 million, of which 23 million lived in extreme misery. The numbers released by IPEA and Getúlio Vargas Foundation show a significant change in Brazil's economy, in the short period of six years.

The study also indicates that the Brazilian middle class now represents close to 51% of Brazil's population. Back in April 2002, this number was 44,19%. The Getúlio Vargas Foundation defines as middle class, those Brazilian families whose earnings vary between R$ 1,064 (US$ 682) and R$ 4,591 (US$ 2,942) per person, monthly. The research included data provided by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

According to Márcio Pochmann, IPEA president, the expansion of the economy, the introduction of social services programs and a series of policies applied towards those in need were the major factors that benefited Brazil.

Despite the good news, there is however some skepticism. For Ladislaw Dowbor, Professor of Economy at PUC (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo), there is no reason for celebration:

"I have followed the economic politics, and for the very first time I can see we are making steady economic and social progress, however it is still tragic where we are at. We still continue to have an income concentration gap, which is simply indecent when compared to other countries," analyzed the professor.

But not only ordinary Brazilian citizens have profited from the prosperity influx. Brazilian politicians have also achieved huge gains, according to a study released by Transparência Brasil - a non-government agency interested in more transparency in Brazilian politics.

Politicians from major metropolitan centers, says Transparência Brasil, have expanded their assets by more than 46,3% in a short period of two years. The data was compiled based on assets declaration released by 180 aldermen, 255 senators, along with House representatives and state assemblymen.

Other numbers are changing Brazil's face of what was once a underdeveloped nation. According to Professor Alex Abiko, a University of São Paulo Professor, in interview with the United Nations Radio in Porto Alegre, the number of favelas (shantytowns) have also increased in the last 10 years.

"The phenomenon called favela is increasing at higher pace than the population in the cities. Cities with no favelas 10 years ago now have them. This phenomenon reveals the government inefficiency to deal with housing alternatives for low income families," Abiko explained.

According to a United Nations prediction, by 2050 there will be approximately 50 million Brazilians living in favelas. The Getúlio Vargas Foundation and Ernst and Young consultants don't see such a scenario. Ana Maria Castelo, from the FGV, believes that the favelas will be extinguished by 2030, considering the number of investments taking place at this time:

"The housing inadequacy deficit will be extinguished and only a few will remain in this situation by choice," offered Castelo. "The actual growth of more than 4% yearly of our Internal Gross Product, and decrease in housing financing interest are some of the variables to be considered," she concluded.

The Civil Construction Industry Union, however, does not believe such prediction and alerts: "With no government subsidies, it will be impossible to resolve the housing deficit in the country."

Whether some issues will persist or not, Brazil still keeps on attracting investments, the most recent one announced by PepsiCo, which is promising an investment of 100 million dollars in the country.

Brazil (the future) vs. the United States (the Titanic)
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, August 07, 2008
Very good article about Brazil and how slowly all boats are being lifted.

But I want to contrast the above article with what has been happening in the United States since January 2001 when the current administration took office.

When the Clinton administration left town in January 2001 there were 17 million Americans receiving food stamps. (To qualify to food stamps that means that you have reached the floor and without it would not be able to feed your family.)

By the time the new administration takes over in January 2009 the United States is going to have over 29 million people receiving food stamps and today the amount of food stamps that people are receiving is not enough to feed their families even for 3 weeks that means that most people on food stamps a starving at least one week per month and the food banks around the United States are in trouble because of the demand of millions and millions of new people who need food to be able to survive.

As the boats are been lifted in Brazil to millions and millions of people in the United States there is millions and millions of people aboard of the Titanic.

In the last few years the people who need help from US government programs such as Medicaid and food stamps - to be eligible for benefits under these programs the person has to prove first that they have a green card or that the person is an American citizen.

If the illegal immigrants could also qualify for these programs then the number of people receiving food stamps would be closer to 40 million people.

The official number of people receiving food stamps today it does not include any illegal immigrant - all these people are Americans and people holding green cards.

Try Another Indicator.
written by Ric, August 07, 2008
Food stamp stats are not a reliable indicator of reality on the ground. Some lie about eligibility, especially recent immigrants. Some trade their stamps for cash because food stamps are not to be used for booze, cigs or non-food items.

Mahmoud Salti, with his uncle Mohammed, ran small grocery stores in Cleveland and bought food stamps for cash from customers at a 20 to 25% discount, then the government redeemed them for full price. Cost the USA over 20 million dollars in 10 years. He´s in Jordan now resisting extradition.

A card sytem is supposed to cut down on the illegal sale for cash of food stamps, but probably not help much on unqualified people signing up.

Why don´t we have food stamps here in Brazil where the poor are skinny? Why don´t we try offering xibé com peixe salgado to the poor in the USA?
Why don´t we import the newspaper machines they use in the states where you put in 50 cents and take one paper off the top of the pile, thus freeing up our jornaleiros tp get batter jobs? Why don´t the Americans go back to horse and cart for small jobs and deliveries, which refuses to go away here in many Brazilian cities even in 2008, and consumes no fuel but grass?

Why has Brazil outlawed gasogênio?

The New World Oreder is just buying Brazil's and the rest of the "emerging economies allegiance. While at the same time breaking the U.S into submission.
Both processes started nearly the same time with the elections of both Bush and Lula.
Everyone is being lured into a web of debt. And there will be "amnesty" of sorts but not without a price.

It's all about globalized socialicism. The global sychronizing of communizm and democracy. Some countries such as Brazil will embrace to maintain their newfound pseudo-prosperity. And others , principally the U.S and it's spoiled citizens will loathe it but accept it as a necessity for their "security".
Let's watch and see how this all plays out. We have the script.

Newfound "pseudo-prosperity"? You might be surprised to know that I use this word often while talking to people.btw, I have another expression too "When you want to divert people´s attention from the Core Problem, create crisis problems". People will discuss such crisis problems endlessly without giving any solutions!

I did not want to comment on this article, until I saw your three comments. Just think about what I wrote.

So am I smilies/wink.gif
Hello Joao
written by dnbaiacu, August 07, 2008
Yeah, good to be "OFF" another thread smilies/smiley.gif The race issue is so tired now if I am understanding you about "created crisis". The solution is within "each individual" and this won't change on a massive scale until "post Armageddon".. This is what I believe anyway. And helps me "keep Hope alive". smilies/smiley.gif smilies/smiley.gif As far as how I commented on this thread, I think it is my responsibility to give others an alternative approach to looking at the situation. My views , which are ancient , are "politically incorrect" I am very aware. But some of us have to be brave enough to be accused of being archaic and silly. I believe in planting all types of seeds because you may get someone thinking in a way that opens up oppurtunities they never imagined for themselves. Spending time arguing about "created crisis" and offering NO SOlUTION whatsoever is just a plain waste of time. Like racism is based on human "fear". And we are a long way from that on a massive scale.
With my comments here I like to show those who just MAY be interested no matter how SILENT they are that A LOT of todays events are already written down. You can spend more energy "preparing" individually for what is ahead instead of trying to figure out desperately just "what" is going on. You can actually figure out what part YOU will play if any in the whole shabang. This is a lot more productive and fun.
We all blog ,not only because we like to write and communicate but because we are thinkers. And actually LIKE sharing our thoughts. But productivity is key. As I am sure you would agree.
For example Ch.c's stuff is COOL. Yes , he is a Brazil basher for whatever reason I have yet to figure out. But he puts A LOT of these articles in perspective. And he is NOT getting paid to do it. I learn a heck of a lot from him.
Augustus is as interesting as well. He likes to teach,... to say the least smilies/wink.gifThanks for helping me find him.
And "Brazuca" ? Genius!
I also enjoy double dot.
And being challenged hearing "Abe" "Simpleton" , "Costinha" . All that is welcome.
Shelly got on my good side. I like her visits. Although her and Augustus reminded me of a cruise ship table setting with strangers where it is customary make it clear in a round about way where you are on the social scale smilies/cheesy.gif . Everyone hear knows at least two languages or has traveled abroad, so we're peers in that sense. A decent education and some money to spare. But I couldn't help but laugh at many of the personal "stats" those two brought up. smilies/smiley.gif I am sure I just started something . But I am trying to create my "entertainment' for tomorrow.

If any emerging economies will benefit from the gradual collapse of America, there will be two, possibly three emerging giants: China and India; pure and simple. Possibly the reformed Russians will also find a place the new “big guy list” primarily because it has big guns. Brazil, despite all this recent overconfidence, will be lucky enough if it gets at all a place at the “Kiddies Table” during a Thanksgiving dinner parties. More than likely, the kitty Brazilians will be well fed, and allowed to roam around a bit, but always under the watchful gaze of one of the grown ups at the big table; liable to be spoken down by a frowning any adult at any time, if found being naughty or feuding with the other emerging kids.

Aim for achieving Regional Hegemony! I think this is the most Brazilians can hope for.
As the U.S follows England’s path of decline from about a hundred years ago, the time is now due for more than one billion proud Chinese zealots to take the Yankee’s leading spot.

It’s a very likely scenario! With that in mind, I’d suggest Brazilians just start behaving now and stop roaming to loud or too far, lest the Chinese may already on the watch.
... and hey! don't worry too much

i dont know if you all have seen the recent studies , but, obescity is on the rise in brazil also, its the fast food invasion , for sure, that is what did the americans in

yeah, america is on the decline , most of them dont even know it, or are in serious self denial. its going to take years to recover from what this administration has done.

only innovation and inventiveness could change the course. like the computor era lifted the united states into prosperity in the 90's (of couse, greed brought it down also )and that was real prosperity for a moment.only time will tell if something like that will happen again in the usa.

but, this is a magnificent time for america haters...it is in a very pathetic state right now
not the time for america haters but anti-imperialists - Brazil should also watch out
written by Coburg, August 08, 2008
The forces at the core leading forward two of the emerging giants' great cause are their respective Communist Parties; even where it’s no longer officially in power.

The theoretical basis guiding their thinking remains Marxism-Leninism, despite the current, fancy imperialist surfaces, which in the end, will be shed like a dragon’s skin, so that their peoples can fully embrace the return of the true cause and resume the true path.

Since the successful national revolutions, there have been, naturally, communist parties in both great nations, without which the Marxist-Leninist revolutionary theory would not have been developed and inculcated into so many for so long. Once the dialectical forces inevitably trigger the materialistic carcass to drop, a new reformed covering will emerge based on its true foundation, as set by the wisdom of Lening and Mao.

But right now,it is time for Brazilians to enjoy the best Olympics the planet has ever seen, and reflect upon its future, the forthcoming age of Enlightment under a new world order.
The Homeless in the USA
written by Ric, August 08, 2008
There about 750,000 total.

The chronically homeless are those who are homeless, unaccompanied, disabled, and have been homeless for over one year.

Of this latter group, the US recently announced that there were 175,914 in 2005, and 123,833 in 2007. It´s down.

The world as we know it could not exist without trade between countries. Brazil has coffee but no wheat. Japan has no oil, but has the know-how in manufacturing. Some Mideast countries have nothing but sand and oil and have to import everything. Some African countries have resources, but the tribalism and violence keep them from producing and prospering.

Historically, when America sneezes economically, the rest of the world gets pneumonia. Right now the USA goes deeper in debt to the tune of 1.3 billion dollars a day, 1 B. of it to China. Obviously this can´t continue.

However, the Brazilian Experience and Germany after the First World War shows that a country can run its paper money down to no value and still come back and prosper.

Two points. First, few countries, probably none, have what the USA does. They are short on some commodities like chrome, but have oil, arable land, fissable material, two coasts, all in the temperate zone save the south of Hawaii, food, wood, factories, technology, etc. In the unlikely scenario of a world wide crash, the Americans could make it while others go under. Without trade with the USA, China´s growth stops. Without America´s protection, places like Kuwait go undefended and any invasion goes unchallenged.

Some Americans think that a crash would be, over the long haul, the best thing that could happen to the USA.

Second, most Americans couldn´t care less if the USA is considered number one or not, and except for a few elitist Progressives, could not be less concerned about what other peoples think of them or their country.

That´s why when McCain was in Sturgis and said he would rather be greeted by the sound of 50,000 Harleys that a couple hundred thousand Europeans as was BHO a couple of weeks ago in Germany, it was a great line. Even tho people in other countries may not fully get why.

Quoted statements of Karl Marx:
"Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes"
The quote, in context, reads as follows:
Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man—state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d'honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion. Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.
Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right
written by Coburg, August 08, 2008
(Karl Marx in Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher, February, 1844)
The foundation of irreligious criticism is: Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man – state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopaedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d’honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people[1].

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.
marxism ?

you have to be joking

the comunisist manifest is one really flawed document

karl marx is poking his finger in your chest and patronizingly telling you to rise up in a violent revolution, and, at the same time, dont ever speak out against it or ever get the notion to start your own business...meanwhile, they will tell you what doctor you have to go to ....you can have it

anyone who thinks some kind of marxist style system is the answer or something good, doesnt understand history , and, the millions and millions of people eliminated in the name of marxist governments. go ahead and put down the united states for its excesses in the world, but, the atrocities of comunist regimes are in a leval for higher than the united states ever was in

written by Coburg, August 08, 2008
the task of history, once the other-world of truth has vanished, to establish the truth of this world. It is the immediate task of philosophy, which is in the service of history, to unmask self-estrangement in its unholy forms once the holy form of human self-estrangement has been unmasked. Thus, the criticism of Heaven turns into the criticism of Earth, the criticism of religion into the criticism of law, and the criticism of theology into the criticism of politics.

Not so new or brilliant of a quote. It was ALWAYS in the Bible with Communists and many Socialists disdain so much, or "fear" (?)

17 And one of the seven angels that had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying: “Come, I will show you the judgment upon the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, whereas those who inhabit the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication

Right there in Revelation 17:1,2

Why are so many poor Americans obese, whilst so many poor Brazilians are...thin?

Sedentary lifestyle, fatty foods that are cheaper than healthy foods, and eating to cope with anxiety.
No time to walk or workout, too expensive and time consuming to eat "right, not enough prayer and meditation.

Absolutely no offense taken.
The point being being a "socialist" you will enjoy the times ahead.
15 And he says to me: “The waters that you saw, where the harlot is sitting, mean peoples and crowds and nations and tongues. 16 And the ten horns that you saw, and the wild beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her devastated and naked, and will eat up her fleshy parts and will completely burn her with fire. 17 For God put [it] into their hearts to carry out his thought, even to carry out [their] one thought by giving their kingdom to the wild beast, until the words of God will have been accomplished.

There will all kinds of Bible, Koran, and Torah burning. Not to mention burnings and bombings of Cathedrals , Mosques, and Synagogues.
You should be a happy kamper.
Unfortunately it's not "predicted" (more politically correct instead of saying the infamous "foretold") to have the desired outcome of the socialist dream.
7 To the extent that she glorified herself and lived in shameless luxury, to that extent give her torment and mourning. For in her heart she keeps saying, ‘I sit a queen, and I am no widow, and I shall never see mourning.’ 8 That is why in one day her plagues will come, death and mourning and famine, and she will be completely burned with fire, because Jehovah God, who judged her, is strong.

9 “And the kings of the earth who committed fornication with her and lived in shameless luxury will weep and beat themselves in grief over her, when they look at the smoke from the burning of her, 10 while they stand at a distance because of their fear of her torment and say, ‘Too bad, too bad, you great city, Babylon you strong city, because in one hour your judgment has arrived!’

The rest of this 18th chapter of Revelation give you the graphic outcome of this turn of events. There will be no Utopian socialist society. Check it out.. Don't be afraid smilies/wink.gif

On Nostradamus,, It is safe to say he did have some "pychic powers", which would make him entertaining at best but not necessarily accurate. The CIA and I am sure other secret service agencies employ those with psychic powers occasionally to help in solving cases. This shows the reality of "other " "whatevers" with the ability to influencen and or enter a human mind and see events as they are happening or about to happen , or with high probability of happening because of a certain chain of events that humans because of their present logistics in time or location cannot see or didn't see.

You also forgot to mention that in Sao Paulo the wealthiest and most developed state, there are still in 2008 well over 600 Favelas.
Great development and great booming economy....isnt it !!!!!

And at least 30 % of this 18 millions or so citizens live in these slums. Meaning around 6 millions people....in SLUMS, in a booming country.
Yessssss.....could you please explain....-why have US$ 200 billion in foreign currencies reserves instead of having only half, and using the other half for infrastructure mostly lacking in your "apparent" economic boom and build millions of social housing ????

It is like asking you Ricardo : if you have money would you rather put it in bank instead of using it for your in need family ???
But this is excactly what Brazil does ?

Ohhhhhh Ricardo the Genius, how could you explain that in a booming economy, Lojas Americanas, Brazil largest discounter, just announced a loss for the 2nd quarter. ?????
If money is available, and if money is spent as detailed in the article, how can anyone explain that a discounter can lose money during the best of all times....reading the Brazilians pretentious comments ?????

and if the economy is booming why then 60 % of the workers are still in the informal economy and not reported as registered workers ?
By informal economy I mean of course....with NO jobs because they dont find any, or a partial job only, or a full time job but mostly very badly paid and lower than the minimum wage naturally !

Funny that Brazil always want to show the world how great the front door of their "house" is.....but not what is inside !!!!!!

If you actually "study" biblical prophecies that have already had their fullfillment ( and there are many and various throughout) the accuracy is amazing.
Suppose those UFO's or invisible ET's have been around much longer than man and are much more intelligent? Then of course they would have information and foresight into "probable" events. And this is taking a purely 'scientific" approach to the subject.
If there is some type of global disaster or crisis "pending" , would a God (?) of supposed LOVE give an "aviso"? Then that is actually what he has done through the "supposed" prophets. There was "psychic" communication going on ( I use this for lack of better politically correct terms) or "inspired by holy spirit". An invisible "energy".

Nostradamus? An entertaining distraction I'd say. Just to decieve overall. Get many away from the real issues. But if some of his foretellings (after the fact that many were already written unbeknowest to many, in the Bible) cause some to investigate further. Great!
We must remember though that biblically these ET's and UFO's want us DEAD. All of us. So they make the likes of Nostradamus accurate in some areas but off base in others which make the intelligent think it is all quakery and guesswork. And subsequently the masses follow the opinions of the 'higher learned".

Previously fullfilled "accurate" biblical prophecies give reason for the "believers" to believe. Otherwise it is just another nice self-help book filled with, possibly ,,, myths. smilies/wink.gif

you said "The huge flow of prosperity has allowed food supply chain Pão de Açúcar, for example, to profit 60.4 million reais (US$ 38.3 million) in the second quarter"

So great ?

in my country with a much smaller population than the city of SP,
our Pão de Açúcar equivalent is earning far more !!!!!
-Migros earned US$ 130 millions for the first semester of 2008, or nearly twice as much as Pao de Açucar.

Are you eating 3 meals a day...with the so generous Bolsa Familia...providing around US$ 15.- per month ????
With the Pao de Açucar earnings, I have doubts !

Ohhhhh and you failed to publish today news about Lojas Americanas, Brazil largest discounter.
They announced a LOSS......with the apparent booming economy Brazil has and all that money available.
Somewhat funny because most of their loss is due to non covered credit cards !!!!!

Hmmmmmm....something doesnt add....in my view !!!

Seriously though.. Hitler was madly insane as we would all agree. But it interesting to note that he dealt heavily in "occult sciences".His moves directed some history in a very linear way. For example todays Jews in the "manufactured" state of Isreal. Everyone involved in that worked together to use "religion" as a front. Claiming the Jews have a divine right to that area, and nothing of the sort is in the "Book" (Joao thanks for that more politically correct word) smilies/wink.gif .Of course you have to study such said book to understand that and NOT be duped.
Can we really blaim the Palestines for feeling "displaced" "kicked out" of a place they lived in for centuries all in the name of the U.S and Great Britain and a few sheiks maintaining a "strategic presence" to protect OIL interests?
This whole charade is coming back to bite with a vengeance. The "Whore" screws the "kings" only to get "tormented" in the end.
Jewish pigrims? Please. All the records of true Jewish geneaology were destroyed in Jerusalem in 70CE. No Jew can trace their lineage accurately. Therefore they can't claim ANYTHING! What went on in Europe was a mass adoption of a religion by people whose main objective was to be custodians of the nobles money. Do the research. It is all a scam coming to the fore.
But of course most of here know this. Should know it anyway.
UFO's , ET's , Angels , Ghosts, whatever you want to call them manipulate horrific events like the Holocaust and World Wars to change and direct the course of history mainly through ASTROLOGY and POSSESION.
It is really all simple. You just have to accept that it is actually happening. It is a matter of pride in the long run. To admit the MAN is not running everything. smilies/wink.gif
Really all we as humans have is CHOICES to make. That has been our true power since we were formed.
On to another topic.
I'd like to discuss Brazil creating their future NATIONAL SECURITY problem with all these present trade alliances with the middle east. Are they just blind or plain stupid? The whole world will be involved in the so called WAR AGAINST TERROR. Just watch what plays out with these Olympics. This is critical. They are on stage. And they aren't going to back down on their Marxist views. Sure , let the money in. Capitalize. But they won't become a democracy with the freedom the Western world is demanding they give their people. And the rest of the world won't be able to really lift a finger. China is a force to contend with now economically and otherwise. And far too many countries are "PROFITING" from trade with them. So at the end of the day SCREW Buddists and the Muslems. They will want to make the fast cash. All the political posturing about religious freedom is political posturing on the part of the US. Please , they are about to elect a president that leans to the left.

The Romans were undermining the temple wall, and many Jews were ready to surrender when the Roman commander, Cestius Gallus, unexpectedly withdrew his troops and left. The Zealots seized the opportunity to reorganize their defenses, but the Christians abandoned the doomed city. In 70 C.E., Roman legions were back, encamped around the walls of Jerusalem, and this time the city perished.

You are right. You seem to understand their mind than the leaders of the Americas, especially that of Brazil as our trade relationship is quite recent and we have not done much nor care to understand the Easterners. I still think that the Brits and the Western Europeans understand the Eastern and Arab mind much better. Chinese culture is ancient and they still consider themselves as the subjects of the "Middle Kingdom". They are super populous and the commitment of their leaders is towards the welfare of their citizens.i.e; to provide basic amenities to their citizens and they have been working on this issue for 40 years since Nixon and Kissinger decided to make peace with them (Did anyone see on the TV that olé Henry was present in the opening ceremony?) This was accomplished with strict discipline and they showed it to the entire world on the 8th that they are as good as any western country and not to underestimate them. That sounds good to me.

We had the pleasure of exchanging comments with a Chinese blogger in one of Ricardo´s article (not the last one, but under the article about the Chinese investment in Brazil). I never can forget what he said: "Democracy and Human rights were invented by the haves to leave behind the have nots". A very articulate blogger and seemed extremely intelligent.

I think what we, the Brazilians can learn from the opening ceremony that we should not consider the Chinese as a bunch of underdeveloped bunch to whom we can sell all the raw material and food items, without buying anything from them. i.e not an one way trade as Ch.c likes to put it. A formidable trading partner and let us not forget about it. The same thing applies to another budding trade partner of ours, the Indians. To understand it, worth re reading the comments of James Coburg and Ch.c. If we do not re think our strategy, we will be another "left behind". The behavior of the members of our delegation to the latest round of Doha round proves it beyond any doubt.

Also, never ever underestimate the Arabs.

The poplular book was just put aside for a bit. ca 1978-1980 I saw first hand what the "freedom from religion" concept was doing to alot of very intelligent individuals. Thank heavens my "free" book (a non-red lettered edition) hadn't been consumed past the end of the first end of it. Concious choice on my part not to go farther and it allowed me to wallow and be wishy washy and go back and fro between my puritanical and protest-ant (not a word) tolerance laden upbringing and the values and views of my forebearers and or contemporaries. I found that's where my comfort level was and that proceeding farther was only going to scare the crap out of me and or perhaps make some things that had not yet come true come true. In time I will finish the task of a one time cover to cover passage although I doubt it will give me reason to believe it tells a story of what is already in progress / destined to be / has occurred since it's original authoring. Our choices may change any of those (as has been done before and will be again).

Achieve your cover to cover goal with the "popular book". You will actually enjoy it. Read a non archaic translation, somewhat middle of the road, not too contemporary. Sometimes they get carried away "updating the english". King James Version makes it more work than necessary.
Truth is , the "popular book" is only read by ANYONE WHEN they are interested IF ever. No book is written for "everyone". Target audience is the rule even with this one. But if you are considering finishing it up , you owe it to yourself. It can serve as a stress reliever, mirror ,or alarm depending on your current state of mind.

You are most welcome, Dnb. I have come across some very smart bloggers from China, India and North Africa in this site. They write in impeccable "Queen´s" English (like our buddy Augustus) and make lots of sense. They don't offend anybody, but if you put them against the wall, they do react in a very polished way. One thing that those guys have is access to inexpensive education at all levels (Especially the Chinese and the Indians) and they do place importance on "Knowledge Power".

Brazil has to learn from them too, instead of "Caressing our Navel", as Ch.c would love to say and Augustus would readily concur. That is because, you don't go into another country either for trade or war, without knowing the local culture, traditions, etc;

For good or bad, the Brits introduced English a long time ago in the East. Most of the Brazilians are unable to understand how important it is as a language of communication with rest of the world. I would like to see our politicians communicating with the leaders of other countries without the help of interpreters with Eastern leaders like Jingtao, Mohan Singh, Mubarrak, etc;

That is my message of the day, unless Simpleton or Augustus come to contest me smilies/cheesy.gif
US Statistics for the Skeptics
written by ST, August 10, 2008
United States Homeless Statistics

* 3.5 million people (1.35 million of which are children) will experience homelessness in a given year.
* Children under the age of 18 account for 39% of the homeless population. 42% of these are under the age of 5.
* 43% of the homeless population are women; 40% of these women are unaccompanied. 22% of homeless women claim domestic abuse as reason for homelessness. 25% of these claim to have been abused within the past year.
* Families with children comprise 33% of the homeless population.
* Vets constitute 40% of the homeless population.
* 1 in every 5 homeless persons has a severe or persistent mental illness.
* 25% of the homeless nationwide are employed.

Homelessness is a world wide phenomena. Have you visit downtown Los Angeles in the morning?

The problem in Brazil is serious but definitely not unique.
Unusual Hybrid system in China: Market Leninism
written by Augustus, August 10, 2008
China has neither a full-fledge market economy, nor did it retain too much from the former Marxist Leninist past... As such, because it adopted most features of the world market economy and provided signfinicant flexibility to its citizens in economic matters, while at the same time maintaining One Party rule (firmly) under the leadership of the communist party,I trust that "coining" their their system as "Market Leninist" appears to be appropriate.

This communal aspect of an authoritarian system that permits broad economic discretion appears to "fit" well nations whose “dominant” culture is primarily Confucian… In fact, I think it may also apply to Singapore, despite the drastic difference in size & population!

Note: this is just an opinion…
Reflecting on Unwarranted Criticism of “Third Party” Views & Preferences…
written by Augustus, August 10, 2008
Unless a group or individual posts an entry where “one claims expertise” about a given issue or subject and substantiates one’s views by verifiable credentials, such entity or person should not be subject to exceeding scrutiny and should certainly not become the target of orchestrated “stone-throwing” ceremonies, simply because of objection to any such views or opinion. The same applies even more significantly to matters of “faith” and “preferences”…

Periodically, anyone browsing comments of given topics, is bound to find views of “others” which range from the “empathic to the objectionable”, an inevitable common-place phenomenon which reflects two simple characteristics (shared by most visitors to this blog) : “being a flawed human being” and “a citizen of a Western Society exercising his/her freedom of speech online”.

Consequently, after much consideration, I felt it was necessary to “broadcast” this view as a “simple passing reminder”, hoping that one would consider applying bare minimum civility towards “others”, while also taking into account that any “given opponent/adversary” should be entitled to express his/her views & opinions.

In light of recent disagreeable instances of unwarranted criticism of “strictly lay or unqualified” opinions of third parties by a given group of intolerant individuals compelled me “take the liberty” of making this observation, as a “passing” reminder to everyone.

how about that russia ? 2000 dead civilians in a couple of days when they go into georgia, and no one is worried about them doing it

written by Augustus, August 10, 2008
I agree with your comments regarding the advantages of totalitarian governments vis-à-vis control of types of protests which are permitted.

Yet, it does not necessarily mean (or points to) residual traces of the Marxist concept... It just reflects the overall authoritarian nature of any Russian system. In the case of China, the Leninist structure was never removed, just merely assuaged.

sorry buddies, religion is not the opium of South America !
written by ch.c., August 11, 2008
You have 2 other well known addictions, looking at your history !

1) INFLATION ! Did you know South Americans have been the World Champions easily surpassing Asia or any other continent ??????

2) POPULISTS politicians you have elected, time and again.
Populists politicians always get elected in countries where the vast majority of the citizens are ignorants because they were not provided a GOOD EDUCATION !
Therefore you can rest assured that for the next several generations, your minority wealthy will make sure you dont get a better education.
That is how they will remain...the wealthy minority, not by their own
NON education !!!!

I must also say, that it is mostly where there is the most populists politicians that historically there was the most INFLATION.

Yesssss...when populism wins, after they sent themselves so many autogoals, HYPER-INFLATION inexorably follows as the rewards of their policies, not so good...after all !!!!

Just look back and you will see your future...in the mirror !!!!
Minor adjustment to the "previous" remark
written by Augustus, August 11, 2008
While the plague of "hyper inflation" is unquestionably a regrettable characteristic of recent Brazilian History and while it is clearly excessive today in other parts of Latin America (most notably Venezuela and Argentina), I'm afraid NOBODY is likely to challenge the current bearer of the Gold Medal of Inflation - Zimbabwe", which is NOT located in South America... Yet, I agree this is just a detail.

As for Populism, another correct and unfortunate characteristic of Latin American politics, I should stress that this "versatile and imaginative" type of government may have had its origins in the American city of Chicago, during the early twentieth century. I’m referring to a particular style of city governance which called "Machine politics" (or some other expression containing the word "machine").

Incidentally, what is the current level of "bile" emerging as you type? I'm merely concerned with the unavoidable impact of so much hatred for a given topic your Health…

Regarding the "opium of the masses" remark, made by the "Unmentionable One"…
written by AUGUSTUS, August 11, 2008
While I strongly oppose Marxist-Leninism, I’m sure the communist gentleman who made the above-mentioned “opium” entry was referring to “Classic Communist terminology” generally attributed to Karl Marx, while making specific reference to the German proletariat… Yet, not surprisingly you manage to shift any quote regarding any issue towards Latin America and its unquestionable problems.

Also as customary, you enjoy humiliating the poorer segments of the world population with the opulence of richer nations.
This is astounding! I’m shocked the limited upbringing to which you were exposed - clearly there was emphasis on economics, math, statistics, and even geography; yet, it appears that little or no attention was paid “good manners”, “basic notions in humanity” (such as kindness for to the less fortunate and disadvantaged individuals), and certainly not to history.

When I see that you actually derive pleasure by humiliating a less advantageous individual (who understandably expresses some measure of pride and joy by a relatively modest recognition of improvement) is monstrous.

Given the opportunity, I suppose you would also boast having nice clothes, clever toys, and a comfortable bank account to any unfortunate refugee you happen to cross in the Geneva airport (as the wretched unwise individual stands in line to be deported by the Swiss Authorities).

When I was brought up, in relative comfort and privilege, I was always reminded to be respectful towards the less fortunate members of society.

You, on the other hand, lack the most basic sense of respect, consideration, and kindness for others!
I suppose your Swiss origin which I previously questioned is now clearly proven by clear blood connection to the least desirable German portion of your indifferent nation… I dare say that some of the most infamous examples of the recent German past – the likes of Joseph Goebbels and Herman Hesse – if still alive today, would be undoubtedly very proud of you…

Ch.c has good points. In addition to a predominatly passive culture due to certain "religious" influences. This "Populism" is a force to contend.
Since it exists and always will (on this side of Armageddon) the best thing to due is have a strategy to cope with it. Mainly what I think most Brazilians have mastered either by preference or force. Minimalism. At least in the north east for the most part people deal with the basics and focus (sometimes too much) on each other. But if you look at some of the homes in the novelas, it's like Whoa!Talk about a lot of STUFF. Things everywhere!
For the average person , being a "minimalist" with style will help you to cope. You can stay afloat with runaway inflation. Thing is, you have to very creative.
If you focus on being thankful you ate "today". And you have clothes on "today". The Central Bank pressing the interest rate button should only startle you "minimally" You plan for it to happen.
Fortunately Brazil is a great place to live simply and enjoy every minute of it. We have to be thankful for this. smilies/smiley.gif

This reminded me of something Brazuca said, "knowledge is something you seek more so than something given to you."
Truth be told , you can be very content in Brazil and quite healthy with the right knowledge.
To date Brazil has "real food" and relatively cheap good healthy food at that. That is much more than you can say for an educated country like the U.S.
That's half the battle. Now if you "seek knowledge" and not get caught up in most religious foolishness and/or partying which is very heavy in the air in Brazil, you can really "get over" so to speak. Run cirlces around the vast majority in reference to your "quality of life". Meaning low personal overhead and "time" to keep learning. Brazil has a very "social" culture. So inevitably depending on what predominates in your mind. You WILL get connected to the right people. People with books. People with computers. Access to even more knowledge. In Brazil, at least in the north east , you are ALWAYS going to eat. No one is going to let you go hungry unless you are a total misfit. So you have less of that drama to worry about.
Your "connections" count for more than anything in Brazil. So it's all about where your mind is focused. From there , the right people connect you to the right circumstances.
dnbaiacu kind nature - what a contrast
written by AUGUSTUS, August 11, 2008
dnbaiacu,
(Or should I say "DNA-CU"- LOL - I simply loved your commenting on somebody else's accidental use of your name. (imaginative isn't it?

Despite your excessive zealot posture towards modern mythology, I must recognize your impressive intelligence, along with an unquestioned kind HUMAN heart, and exceedingly pleasant nature. Indeed, your excellent (cute) use of humor is refreshing. Even more surprising is the apparent tolerance you seem to have towards "certain individuals" who excel in arrogance and complete disregard towards others.

Just a word of caution, based on your previous comment: avoid making use of "novellas" - so(sadly)an unquestionable part of Brazilian society, for the "unmentionable odious person" is BOUND to pick on it. He is constantly making reference to "the Brazilian novellas" as he ruthless attacks some aspect of Brazilian society and/or behavior…

As for the minimalist comment (a rather humorous, very cute remark, by the way), it does suggest the kind nature of Brazilians, particularly the least fortunate ones, who are always "making do" with minimum assistance they manage to secure, always ready to help to one another, and even find it in their "hearts" reasons to express thankfulness for the little (silly) material wealth they seem to have...
The poorer the region, the most kind tends to be its population - dnbaiacu,
written by AUGUSTUS, August 11, 2008
Your focus in the Brazilian Northeast as the source of kindness and support for others around them is a typical example of the kind, fraternal Brazilian heart, most notably present in poorer sections of any country around the world.

As previously acknowledged, populism is indeed a reality in Latin America, with deeply rooted origins, particularly, again in Northeastern Brazil and other parts of Latin America, most notably (and surprisingly) Argentina.
Yet, Venezuela nowadays appears to represent the leading example of shameful Populist proclivities
as for education...
written by AUGUSTUS, August 11, 2008
Education was clearly not a focus of previous Brazilian administrations.

In fact, that's the reason why I so much object for any Olympic ambition for 2016 and, especially, to any plans by the Brazilian government to utilize scarce resources financing the Education of Africans (according to a recent article I read in this blog)
I do not object efforts to assist the less fortunate countries, but such noble act should be contemplated by the wealthy, selfish regions - most notably Switzerland - as Brazilians have way too many illiterate citizens to be overlooked and bypassed, for the same of obtaining "good international image".

Good to hear from you!
Lula is just running his mouth about the games. He knows what's going on. (or does he?) There are too many things going on at the same time that are going to have the time or monies to think about any Olympics.
It is interesting to see the Communist world flexing its muscles. Russia is defying the U.S. This is the trend.
I don't even understand the effort making an article out of his statement? Lula is appearing infantile like Bush. Saying things just to get attention. Bush and Lula were strategically placed "distractions". If you look back in retrospect you can see that.
Yeah, there is no point to posting negatively and arrogantly "attacking" other posters. But I think some entertain themselves with that. And that's cool for them. I don't take anything personally. We're on line entertaining ourselves and hopefully learning something from one another. Actually some of these "haters" are showing themselves to be pretty cool. More open minded than I expected. smilies/kiss.gif

Hi,

I am enjoying the comments made by you, Lord August, Admiral Forrest as well as Ch.c (Augustus will certainly blow his top) not to forget our good buddy (not so) Simpleton. Will come back later, as I am slightly busy.

I just wanted to reply to one sentence of Dnb:

Mainly what I think most Brazilians have mastered either by preference or force. Minimalism.

Not by preference, but by "force" exercised by the Government sponsored advertisements!

Knowing Dnb, for a few months, I know how his sarcastic his comments are! He is 1/3 Brazilian 1/3 American and 1/3 Prim and Proper Brit smilies/cheesy.gif

Augustus may be right about Ch.c: He is 100% Teutonic smilies/grin.gif smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/wink.gif

As for Augustus: Though he is physically present on Manhattan Island, he is 20% Brasilian and 80% Brit.

Re Forrest: 90% Texan, 5% American and 5% Brazilian smilies/smiley.gif

Finally, we all seem to be forming a decent opposition party in Brazil. smilies/grin.gif

At Joao's request - The Root Causes of the current Russian-Georgian conflict - a Historial Analysis by AUGUSTUS

Prior to taking up the suggested (and rather excellent) new topic for subsequent discussions, I would like to remark on JOAO’s tremendous influence and indisp**able respect (no doubt earned through years of participating in the BRAZZIL various sites. Although I suspect our proximity in age, there is no doubt that JOAO is generally perceived “around here” as a senior member and a scholar, thereby providing an unusual type of a Leader or, perhaps more appropriately, a Director, Moderator and Overseer.

JOAO’s quote: But lets change the topic a bit (though it is about Marxism).Anyone wants to talk about the conflict between Russia and Georgia? Does Putin want to rebuild the erstwhile U.S.S.R?

Well, my good friend, you "asked for it" - LOL

Firstly, I would like to clarify a very important detail (which incidentally was also included in one of Dnb’s recent replies) still connecting Russia with Marxism, which no longer applies... Not quite!
Since the fall of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, due to the advent of an upheaval in Moscow in 1991, Marxism-Leninism was formally removed as the leading ideology of the country.

The representatives of Russia, Ukraine, and Belorussia at some point around Dec 1991, declared that the USSR had ceased to exist and founded an association of sovereign states, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). A few days later, 11 states (out of the original 15 countries which constituted the USSR) signed a protocol formally establishing the “Commonwealth of Independent States”. As he had become a “paper tiger” (a president without a country), Mr. Gorbachev formally announced his resignation to the nation. Considering that Mr. Boris Yeltsin was already the president of the Russian Republic, and an active supporter of the military Coup d’état which triggered the Soviet disintegration (an event which, during my youth, I never thought possible, and still astounds me when I thing about it – LOL).

The Yeltsin years, a period of immense chaos and loss of influence of the former Super Power, contributed a great deal for the loss of prestige of the Russian Communist Party, which not only fell from power, but was nearly completely ostracized (and almost eliminated).

With the election of Putin, a former KGB Leading secretary (I forgot the former title for the position), although the communists never regained control of the Russian government, the former KGB (which now has a new name, but is constituted by the nearly the same individuals and structure) gradually regained its former status (and power) and a neo-authoritarian regime (but still NOT Marxist-Leninist) was implemented - under the rosy appearance of a recent establish democratic government. Despite the return to some limitations and (more discrete) persecutions and prohibitions of the “good old days”, there is no question that the Russian economy not only shed its former Marxist nature, but became a nation of millionaires (mostly opportunists in the right place in 1991), which, given the tremendous resources, industrial and military infrastructure, allowed Russia to find itself a newly rich country.

As such, we are dealing now with a Neo-Authoritarian, newly enriched, recently empowered country, with a historical tradition of encirclement (where by Russians behaved in a paranoid fashion, certain they were surrounded by enemies, ready to attack), along with the an immense National Pride (which had been deeply hurt with the humiliating dismemberment of the USSR), holder of immense natural resources (oil & gas chiefly among them), and greatly offended by recent international events.

Indeed, with the gradual adherence of its former Warsaw Pact Allies into either (in cases both) NATO and the European Union, with the shocking admission of 3 of the previous Soviet republics (the Baltic States) into the EU, with the planned installations of American missiles in 2 of its former allies (Poland & Czech Republic), I believe Russia has reached the limit of its patience with unlucky Georgia.

Indeed, because Georgian and the 3 above-mentioned Baltic republics were the only former Soviet republics which did NOT formally joined the CIS in 1991, and because Georgia and Russia have been exchanging threats and insults to each other over Tbilisi’s refusal to recognize Russia as its “due” overseer, along with Russians (until now) informal support of various Georgina separatist movements, not to mention the recent Formal, Open invitation (made by George Bush in Berlin) for Georgia’s “candidacy” for entry into NATO during the last formal meeting of this Military organization, must be undoubted the main contributing factors for whatever minor incident (which I honestly do not know) which triggered this VERY serious “war-like” conflict currently “in progress” in the Caucasus Mountains…

No, I came into picture only by the end of 2006 and who has been around in this site is (whether you like it or not) is Ch.c!!

As for the web address you gave, I did go through it. But, let me tell you something interesting. Quém manda é Mittal in steel business. If you dont believe me, you better ask Ch.c. After all, Ch.c hobnobs with Indian bankers. Has lunch with them quite frequently, I was told!!
Recent News from the Russian - Georgian conflict

Eastern Europe anxious as Russia attacks Georgia; calls for NATO intervention

WARSAW, Poland - Poland and other former Soviet satellites have expressed deep anxiety that the escalation of fighting between Russia and Georgia signals a resurgent Russia's willingness to use force to dominate the newly democratic region.

After fighting broke out last week in Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia, the presidents of Poland and the three Baltic states issued a joint statement calling Russia's policy "imperialist and revisionist."

NOW... While they may have exaggerated (just a bit), who can blame their fears (considering the historial Soviet invasion of Budapest in 1956 & Prague in 196smilies/cool.gif?
