Brazil's Fainthearts Let the Nation Down PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Fitzpatrick

Shame, proclaims frontpage of Jornal do Brasil with Zidane eating a little canary, symbol of Brazil's national team "These guys don't play with their hearts. They only play for money," was the comment made by one disappointed fan on TV Bandeirantes news after Brazil was knocked out of the World Cup by France. The Brazilians were a disgrace. The players brought shame to themselves and let their country down.

This highly-paid line-up of stars - Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Ronaldo, Kaká, Roberto Carlos, Adriano, Robinho, Cafu, Cicinho - played with no heart, no guts, no pride and no sense that they represented the hopes of everyone back in Brazil. They were leaderless and aimless and did not have the individual and collective character to recover from an early goal in the second half.

They had 35 minutes to equalize and take the game into an extra period but failed to meet the challenge. The dream of winning the World Cup for a sixth time ended with the final whistle and Brazil has now entered a period akin to mourning. Since virtually the entire team lives abroad they will not appreciate just how deeply felt this blow has been.

It is too early to make any comment on the future of the team and that of manager Carlos Alberto Parreira. It is also probably too much to expect some apologies, particularly from someone like Brazil's veteran captain, Cafu.

Not only did he play badly but he showed no leadership qualities. Nor did Kaká who is being groomed to replace him. Neither made any effort to encourage the team when it was struggling and demoralized. When Cafu was finally taken off, the captain's armband went to the goalkeeper Dida who was in no position to rally the team.

Parreira delayed too long before making substitutions and showed no remorse in his post-match comments. Unlike the Argentinean manager, Jose Pekerman, who resigned immediately after his team's defeat against Germany, Parreira gave no indication that he would take the honorable way out. Instead, he made a lame excuse, saying that when a team was playing well the players got the applause but when it was playing badly the manager got the blame.

Whether or not Parreira saves his face by resigning, his days are surely numbered. As for the team, it is surely time to get rid of Cafu, Roberto Carlos and even, in my opinion, Ronaldo. They have all given great service but it is time to move on.

Players like Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Kaká, Cicinho and, perhaps, Adriano should be the new base on which the team is formed even though none of them performed consistently in this championship. There is bound to be a campaign to bring back Luiz Felipe Scolari, who guided Brazil to the championship four years ago and has taken Portugal through to the semi finals this time.

It is almost a relief that the World Cup is now over. Life can return to normal and people can try and forget this episode in which Brazil struggled against lowly teams like Croatia, Australia, Japan and Ghana. Despite the victories against these teams, most fans were not impressed and I doubt if the defeat by France really came as a surprise.

Companies would be wise to scrap all the advertising campaign involving the players and manager immediately as they are in danger of backfiring. Would you buy a cellular just because Parreira urges you to do so? Would you open an account with a bank just because Ronaldo and Kaká have accounts there? Would you buy a bubble gum because Ronaldinho Gaúcho claims to like it?

Perhaps if the players had devoted more time to football and less to advertising campaigns and frolicking in front of the cameras during the "training" periods in Switzerland and Germany we might be now looking forward to a semi-final against Portugal rather than seeing Portugal as a proxy for Brazil.

John, Brazil lost because France has a great player. Give some credits to the immense talents of Zizou. Period. To quote Zidane “ l’aventure continue”

Guys. France won because all players are from Africa. Yes I am happy to see these guys winning , but I am little bit annoyed to see French racists taking credit for this victory. Believe me I know very well these pretentious cheese eaters…
Tomorrow after the game is over they will forget victory and fall back to their daily discrimination. French people are the worst people in this earth. Salut les connards de Français.

"The people from the carribean love Brazil and their great football team."

Are you kidding me?? Great Football Team?? That is hilarious. This team was possibly the most overrated - EVER!! What I saw was a bunch of chunkers who could barely get their asses around the pitch. The play of Ronaldinho was not indicative of the best player in the world - not even in the top 20! Cafu - HA! Kaka - another joke. Unispired play and a deep embarrassment to themselves and Brazil.

Brazil once had a great football legacy but that time is over and the torch has been passed. I expect that Brazil in on the decline and you won't see them back in the finals for years to come. Fitzpatrick is right about one thing: more time displaying some passion and love for the game and a little less time stroking your f**king little egos, worrying about your supermodel wives and advertising contracts would have served them well. These guys looked like f**king zombies on the field. NO HEART, NO SOUL - SOLD OUT TO THE ALMIGHTY $$$, YOU GUYS SUCK!! SHAME ON YOU!!

Brazil played below their capability ALL
written by Guest, July 02, 2006
The reality is that Brazil played below their talents from the beginning. The only game in which they resembled a Brazilian team was the Japan game. I'm a Brazillian football fan, but I must admit that even the first-time World Cup Ghana team played better football than Brazil!! - that's if you like the game of football.

What's worst is that losing didn't seem to bother them too much - maybe because they don't live in Brazil anymore.

Their losing had nothing to do with talent, the majority of them especially Ronaldo just didn't care to work!! If the ball was not placed at his feet, he was not about to run for 3 yards to go get it. What's worst is that the Coach allowed that Bulls**t attitude instead of Benching his Ass, which sent the message that: "It's not your contribution and desire to win that get's you on the field, it's your NAME and STATUS"

There are many without his NAME and STATURE that would have played their heart out on the field - instead of taking leisurely strolls and jogs on the field like some Prima Donna!!

They deserved the whipping they got. I just wished it was a first timer like Ghana had done it, to REALLY wake those bought-out Prima Donnas with no National Pride!!!

I sure hope that Coach finds a new job!! - sitting with legs folded under the shed the whole tournament like yet another Prima Donna, like he was too high in the sky to get on his feet and get into the game like that other Brazilian Couch Scolari.

That's the price for arrogance and lazziness folks.

Brasil once had a great football legacy? Does anyone remember that this is the same group that brought the championship home 4 years ago? And Fitzpatrick, a Scott writting about the performance of Brasil, that is pathetic. Were my dear friend is England, you want to talk about a national embarrasment. Brasil still holds 5 championships and have produced arguably the worlds best players on the most consistant basis. Yes, this year was a disappointment, but there will be a new level of excitment and fever when the current group of young players mature in 2010. Yes the money is obscene and has a definte impact on players from all nations. But I will bet, that there are very few teams in this tournament that played with the national pride Brasil did. They failed, it is something unfortunatly we live with for 4 years, but a national disgrace? Come on John, it's nothing compared to the British killing innocent civilians in the Middle East, now that is a national disgrace, perhaps you should write about that. It is after all is said and done...just a game.

A perspective on shame
written by Guest, July 02, 2006
I love it! If the only shame brought down on Brasil is by our team of champions, then we are doing a lot better than I thought! Compared with the shame brought to our US friends by raping a young Iraqui woman and buring the entire family, or murdering a village of innocent poor civilians, or torturing prisoners who may or may not be combatants, then soccer shame we in Brasil can all live with. I still enjoy living in a place where our governement does not listen to the phone calls of every citizen or watch every transaction at the bank. Who would have ever thought that a country in South America would enjoy more freedom than the once powerful now impotent US. They have become whores to oil and they are paying a dear price. It boggles the mind that 70% of American's are opposed to American polices and they are powerless to stop it as politicans are purchased by oil and defense lobyists, I will take Brasilian democracy any day. No everyone, we must place shame and disgrace in it's proper place, in the numbers of lives lost in a shameful war, not the number of goals we failed to score in a few soccer games.

Yes start pointing fingers at the US and Britain - surely they are to blame for your little faggot balls shriveling up. BTW - your country is still in a world of s**t!! You can talk about raping a woman (like that doesn't happen in Brazil!! LOL) or wiretapping but the fact of the matter is WC victory or not you are still living in hell and when the next bought and paid for election puts that dips**t back in office or when the next riot occurs in SP and 40 policemen are killed, go on and blame the rest of the world like you've always done. Brazil team loses..long live Brazil & fo
written by Guest, July 02, 2006
My method of football watching is to expect the worst. And I was thus pleased that my side, Australia, was respectably beaten by Brazil 2-0 instead of 6-0; and made it to round 2 in its 2nd ever World Cup appearance.

The buzz generated in Australia has ignited the grass roots of the game here the football super-powers should be on notice in future as the smaller countries edge into the World Cup in future.

This is all good for the most transnational of games. The only way has been down for Brazil - all part of sometimes viscious ebb and flow of the "joga bonita" but I shudder to think of the next generation will produce...and also what the rest of the world will serve up in 2010.
Brazil 1982 - 70.
written by Guest, July 03, 2006
I really miss Brazil 1982, I am from middle East, but my entire family supports Brazil and especially adore Brazil 1982 with Zico, Socrates, Eder, Falcao, and more. This 2006 World cup was a big chance for Brazil to create another Brazil 1982, but Prierra the stupid coach went and depended on old players instead of using the same players who played and won the Confideration cup. For god's sake they only wanted to break the record of Muller 14 goals so they kept playing Ronaldo in every game while Robinho and other youngsters sitting on the bench. I swear this is the stupidest action a coach has done. I was not surprised at all to see Brazil lost against France when I saw the formations and the players in the pitch. I wish he used Cincinho, Robinho, Adriano, Junniho, Ronaldinho, Kaka from the beginning and used Ronaldo for the end of every match, but instead , he put him, Cafu and Roberto Carlos there from the beginning spoiling every Attack speeds. Oh what a sad fact this is, Brazil with all its stars could not create a real brazilian football, I have never seen Brazil playing Italian style in my life, and that was against Ghana!, Prierra is well-known of his European style of playing he is not really a fan of brazilian football I believe. If Tele Santa was alive and saw what happened in this world cup, he would prefer not to be Brazilian again. Hails to Tele Santa and Screw Prierra.

written by Guest, July 03, 2006
Why would Brazilians soccer players play hard for team Brazil when they have to go abroad to earn money? Almost all the top stars are playing in Europe because of the money. You can make one bad turn and hurt yourself your career is over. Pele never made any big money playing until he came to the USA, the country many of you love to hate. Professional sport is all about money not love for the game.

i think the point john was trying to make isnt about winning or losing. its about playing so badly and losing in such an ugly manner, without even trying. remember the facts: zidane is retiring after the world cup and hes like what? 34 years old? and brazil has TWO best footballers of the world in her lineup. one past and one current, not to mention the rest of the european based players in the squad. i remember a friend saying .. our soccer team is the pride of brasil. now that they have lost in this way, its no wonder all the brasil jerseys are on sale across the country.
give john a break, hes just putting things the way they are, the way they appear to be. i still remember the other article he wrote when people were just giving him s**t for saying that brasil was playing badly in the tournament and would lose if they continued playing in that manner. well... facts are facts. and another fact is most brazilians dont really know much about the international football scene.. just mainly brazilian, italian and spanish, leagues. whatever they show on televsion. but the passion of brazilian fans has really impressed me, even though that passion sometimes tends to overrule good sense.
Who was surprised?
written by Guest, July 03, 2006
Really, we do not need to be very soccer savvy to realize that Brazil did not deserve to make it to the finals. They were disorganized, non chalant, having a we-are-the-best-f*-the-rest attitude off the field, and as usual, trying to keep secrecy for some fools to buy into the idea that "yes, we have a great team and the best strategy to defeat anyone". C'me on, who was blind here? Those peg-legs knew it was coming... and if anyone expected anything better against a strong team like France, sorry, but were most fans that naive or so passionate that they became blind? Better get some classes with old school like Rivelino, Tostao, Pele, etc. Maybe then we could see some improvement. Unfortunately, passion from the players' part is long gone.
Re: Who was surprised?
written by Guest, July 03, 2006
Well, I was not totally surprised when Brazil lost to France, after the initial games, but I was surprised when I noticed that a team carrying so many talented players was not performing up to the expectation in spite of Parreira.

Only Parreira can get a pile of diamonds and turn it into pieces of glass.

Parreira never, ever, fooled me. We conquered the 1994 WC with him because of two things: Romario and a lot of luck.

He is a smart man for many things but a horrible soccer strategist. His team goes to the field without a well designed tactic and he is incapable of changing things during the game when needed. Against France, he reacted on panic instead strategy. He had shown to the world how naïve he is and I bet you that many but many coaches out there shook their heads in disbelief.

We need a coach that will take all those pansy-ass rich football players too afraid of hurting themselves for their country (any Brasilian knows the only time we can feel proud of our country is during WC season) and turn them into real football players. By the way, isn't it surprising that one of the best players on the Argentine team, Carlos Tevez, does not play in Europe, but in Brazil? Maybe we need to go back to our roots and begin ignoring those players that have made it big, that are playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid, and instead call upon players from Sao Paulo, like Minero, or from other respectable Serie A clubs (Flamengo, Cruzeiro, Corinthians) whose greatest career accomplishment would be playing on the WC stage, representing Brasil.

Isto meu país jamais me deu.

And freedom?? Ever try sending money to a COMPANY outside of Brazil??? You better be prepared to show documents, not only invoices, etc., but also PROVE that you couldn't have purchased these SAME SERVICES or PRODUCTS here, in brazil!!!

I wish people on this site who make comments would treat each other with more respect. I think the webmasters should introduce a sign up system and ban members who needlessly trade insults.

If you Brazilians put as much effort into improving your country, as you do into watching a bunch of people kick a silly ball around a field, Brazil could probably be transformed overnight. In the company where I work, people were given afternoons off to watch football. And on days where this was not permitted the stupid sods brought in televisions and watched it in the office! This is clearly a serious attitude to doing business. I had to field questions from England as to why the telephones were not being answered and why our office had a 'Mary Celeste' type quality about it. Then I was asked to estimate how many man hours had been lost as a result of this shambles. I told them (my countrymen in London) that Brazilians are basically a bloody shower and will skive off at any opportunity.
