‘Poverty Still Has Collor,’ Brazilian Official Recognizes

Brazil’s 5th Intergovernmental Forum on the Promotion of Racial Equality just took place in BrasÀlia. The purpose was to discuss the organization of regional seminars and implement strategies for the incorporation of the National Racial Equality Policy in the actions of state and municipal governments.

At the opening of the forum, Douglas Martins, deputy secretary of the Special Secretariat of Policies to Promote Racial Equality, commented that, unfortunately, "poverty still has color" in Brazil and that the gathering places priority on discussing the reality experienced by blacks in every state of the Union and indicating solutions.

Martins underscored the importance of the forum and said that the event intends to extend the policy of promoting racial equality to the states.

"This forum is based on the principle of decentralization and the dissemination of policies for the promotion of racial equality, making these policies coherent in the states and municipalities."

Topics such as health care for the black population and government policies for the promotion of gender and race will be the themes discussed at the meeting, which continues until tomorrow (26).
